Meso-Zeaxanthin
The third macular carotenoid, concentrated at the very centre of the fovea. Supplementing it reliably raises macular pigment density, but whether adding it to lutein and zeaxanthin improves actual vision remains unsettled.

What the science says
- Raises macular pigment optical density Moderate evidence
A meta-analysis of supplementation trials found that lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin all increase macular pigment optical density in a dose-related way. A larger systematic review and meta-analysis of lutein/zeaxanthin intake confirmed the pigment response is consistent across studies.
- Improvement in visual function Limited evidence
A head-to-head randomised clinical trial in non-advanced age-related macular degeneration compared formulations with and without meso-zeaxanthin and found only limited differences in visual function outcomes despite pigment increases. Contrast sensitivity gains reported in some trials are small and inconsistently replicated.
- Slowing age-related macular degeneration Limited evidence
The large AREDS2 trial that established carotenoid supplementation for AMD progression used lutein and zeaxanthin, not meso-zeaxanthin. No comparably sized outcome trial has tested whether adding meso-zeaxanthin changes disease progression.
