Goji Berry

Goji berries are a genuinely nutrient-dense food with an unusually high zeaxanthin content, and small trials show they raise macular pigment density. The eye-health story is the most credible one; the immunity, anti-aging and "superfruit" claims are not supported by controlled human evidence.

What the science says

  • Raises macular pigment optical density in small trials Limited evidence

    A randomized pilot trial had healthy adults eat 28 g/day of dried goji berries (about 25 berries) five days a week for 90 days; macular pigment optical density and skin carotenoid levels increased significantly versus a commercial lutein/zeaxanthin supplement comparator. An earlier study in people with early age-related macular degeneration found increased macular pigment and serum zeaxanthin after 90 days of goji intake. Both trials are small (roughly 13-27 participants), and neither measured visual acuity or AMD progression — the endpoint is a biomarker, not vision.

  • Small, inconsistent effects on glucose and lipids Limited evidence

    A systematic review and meta-analysis of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide on glucose and lipid metabolism pooled small randomized trials and found modest improvements in some glycemic and lipid measures. Trials were few, heterogeneous in dose and preparation, and mostly conducted in China; the pooled effects are small enough that the clinical relevance is unclear.

  • Energy, metabolism and immunity claims do not hold up Limited evidence

    A controlled study found a single dose of goji berries did not affect postprandial energy expenditure or substrate oxidation in overweight men, undercutting the "metabolism booster" marketing. Immune claims rest on polysaccharide effects on lymphocyte and cytokine measures in animals and a few small unblinded human studies; no trial has shown reduced infection incidence or duration. The ORAC-style antioxidant marketing that made goji famous in the 2000s was retired as a meaningful health metric by the USDA in 2012.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseEye-health trials used 28 g/day of dried whole berries (roughly 25 berries), five days a week for 90 days, delivering an estimated few milligrams of zeaxanthin dipalmitate. Metabolic trials of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide juice or extract typically use 120-300 mL/day of standardized juice or 150-300 mg/day of polysaccharide for 30-90 days. As a food, a 30 g serving of dried berries provides roughly 100 kcal, 3 g fiber and meaningful vitamin A and iron. Whole berries are cheaper and better evidenced than concentrated "goji juice" products.
SafetyWell tolerated as a food; adverse effects are uncommon and mild (digestive upset at large intakes). Two real interaction concerns: multiple case reports describe elevated INR and bleeding in patients on warfarin who added goji juice or tea, likely via CYP2C9 inhibition — avoid or monitor closely on warfarin. Goji also has additive potential with blood-glucose- and blood-pressure-lowering drugs. Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported, with cross-reactivity to tomato, peach and other fruit allergens. Pesticide residues on imported dried berries have been flagged by European monitoring programs; choose tested or organic sources. Insufficient data in pregnancy — goji has traditional emmenagogue use, so caution is reasonable.
