Lutein Esters
The form of lutein that occurs naturally in marigold flowers, where the molecule is attached to fatty acids and must be cleaved in the gut before absorption. It raises macular pigment about as well as free lutein; the open question is whether that translates into better vision for most people.

What the science says
- Absorbed comparably to free lutein Moderate evidence
A randomized cross-over trial in adults compared marigold-derived lutein in free versus ester form and found both raised serum lutein, with ester forms performing at least as well when taken with a meal. This is a single small trial, so claims that one form is clearly superior are not supported.
- Increases macular pigment optical density Moderate evidence
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found that lutein and zeaxanthin intake reliably increases macular pigment optical density in a dose-dependent way. The increase is consistent across studies; it is a biomarker rather than a vision outcome.
- Effect on actual visual function is smaller Limited evidence
A meta-analysis and meta-regression of randomized trials in healthy adults and people with eye disease found only modest and inconsistent improvements in contrast sensitivity and glare recovery. Benefit is clearest in age-related macular degeneration, where lutein is used as part of an AREDS2-style formula rather than alone.
