Waxy Maize Starch

A high-molecular-weight starch marketed as a fast carbohydrate for refuelling. It leaves the stomach quickly, but trials disagree on whether that translates into better performance.

What the science says

  • Faster refuelling in one trial Limited evidence

    A randomised trial found that a high molecular weight glucose polymer taken after exercise improved performance in a subsequent cycling bout compared with a standard glucose solution, attributed to faster gastric emptying and glycogen resynthesis.

  • No advantage as fuel during exercise Moderate evidence

    A controlled comparison found glucose polymer molecular weight did not affect exogenous carbohydrate oxidation during exercise, meaning the body does not use it any faster while you train.

  • Older starch-structure data are mixed Limited evidence

    An earlier trial comparing starch structures found differences in glycogen resynthesis that did not translate consistently into subsequent cycling performance.

Dosage & safety

Studied dose60–100 g in the hours after exercise, or 30–60 g per hour during prolonged efforts. It matters mainly when a second session follows within a few hours.
SafetyA food carbohydrate; the main issue is bloating from large single servings. It is still a rapidly absorbed carbohydrate and unsuitable as a routine choice for people managing blood glucose.
