Pea Protein
Pea protein supports muscle gains when dosed generously - roughly 50 g/day in the one substantial trial - and performs close to whey. Its lower leucine and methionine content mean it is not gram-for-gram equivalent to dairy protein.
What the science says
- Increased muscle thickness during 12 weeks of training Moderate evidence
In 161 men doing 12 weeks of upper-limb resistance training, 25 g pea protein twice daily produced only a trend toward group differences in biceps thickness overall (p = 0.09). In the weakest participants at baseline, gains were +20.2% (pea), +15.6% (whey) and +8.6% (placebo), with pea significantly better than placebo and whey not different from either. Strength gains did not differ between groups, and the trial was run with the pea protein manufacturer.

A meta-analysis of 16 RCTs found protein source did not affect absolute lean mass or muscle strength, though animal protein was favored for percent lean mass. In adults under 50, animal protein gave a small extra gain in lean mass (weighted mean difference 0.41 kg, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.74).
- Amino acid profile requires larger doses Limited evidence
Pea protein is limited in methionine and supplies roughly 8% leucine versus about 11% for whey, so per-meal doses need to be 1.3-1.5 times larger to match the muscle protein synthesis stimulus. This is mechanistic reasoning from leucine-threshold studies rather than a directly tested dosing protocol.
