Hemp Protein

Hemp protein is a fiber-rich but moderate-quality plant protein with measured protein quality well below whey, casein or soy, and no human trials at all on muscle, strength or body composition. It is a whole-food-style protein, not a performance supplement.

What the science says

  • Protein quality is well below dairy and soy Moderate evidence

Laboratory analysis of 30 commercial hemp products found PDCAAS values of 49-53% for whole hemp seed, 46-51% for hemp seed meal and 63-66% for dehulled seed, with lysine the first limiting amino acid in every product. For comparison, whey, casein and soy protein isolate score about 1.00.

  • No trials on muscle, strength or recovery Limited evidence

There are no published randomized trials testing hemp protein for hypertrophy, strength, or exercise recovery. Every performance claim on a hemp protein label is extrapolated from general protein research done with other proteins.

  • High fiber content lowers protein density Moderate evidence

Commercial hemp powders are typically only 50-60% protein with substantial residual fiber, so a 30-40 g scoop delivers roughly 15-25 g of protein. The fiber helps satiety and regularity, but you need larger servings - and tolerate more GI bulk - to reach a useful protein dose.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseNo trial-based dose exists. If hemp is your primary protein, budget for the low PDCAAS and lysine limitation by eating more total protein or pairing it with a lysine-rich source such as pea or soy.
SafetyGenerally well tolerated; the fiber load can cause bloating and loose stools. Hemp foods contain trace THC and CBD; amounts are normally far below intoxicating levels, but positive workplace urine drug screens have been reported with heavy consumption of hemp products - relevant for tested athletes and safety-sensitive occupations. Rare hemp seed allergy exists, with reported cross-reactivity to other seeds.
