Eye Strain Formulas
Multi-ingredient blends for screen fatigue, usually built around lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin and bilberry. A few individual ingredients have small positive RCTs, but the blends as sold are untested and the trials are mostly manufacturer-funded.

What the science says
- Lutein and zeaxanthin for screen-related eye strain Limited evidence
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in high electronic screen users reported improvements in self-reported eye strain, sleep and attention with a lutein/zeaxanthin preparation. The sample was small and the trial was funded by the ingredient supplier, and a separate RCT in children found gains mainly in visual and cognitive performance measures rather than symptom relief.
- Astaxanthin for digital eye strain Limited evidence
A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial reported improvements in acute and chronic digital eye strain in children taking a branded astaxanthin. It is a single manufacturer-sponsored trial in a specific population, and no independent replication exists.
- Blends as sold Limited evidence
No trial has tested a typical commercial multi-ingredient eye strain formula against placebo. Combining ingredients that each have thin, sponsor-linked evidence does not add up to a demonstrated effect, and doses of individual actives in blends are often below those studied.
