What the science says
- Works as a protein source Strong evidence
The muscle mass and strength benefit of supplemental protein during resistance training is established by a meta-analysis of 49 randomized trials. Hydrolysate delivers the same amino acids as intact whey, so this benefit carries over.
- Faster recovery from muscle damage Moderate evidence
A randomized trial in women found that whey protein hydrolysate accelerated recovery of muscle function after damaging exercise. A separate randomized trial in top-class orienteering runners also reported improved recovery measures, but both studies are small.
- Advantage over regular whey Limited evidence
No adequately powered head-to-head trial shows hydrolysate produces more muscle or strength than ordinary whey isolate or concentrate. The faster absorption is measurable, but its practical payoff in trained people is unproven.
