Fruit & Vegetable Concentrates
Encapsulated dried juice powders sold as insurance against a poor diet. They reliably raise blood levels of carotenoids and folate, but no trial shows they improve health outcomes the way eating the produce does.

What the science says
- Raising blood micronutrient levels Moderate evidence
A four-week randomised controlled trial in Japanese adults found mixed fruit and vegetable juice concentrates increased serum carotenoids and folate and lowered plasma homocysteine. Several similar trials report the same biomarker shifts, which is the most consistent finding in this literature.
- Cardiovascular and pulmonary markers Limited evidence
A randomised controlled trial in heavy smokers reported improvements in some markers of pulmonary function and cardiovascular risk with an encapsulated juice powder concentrate. Trials of this kind are small, short and frequently manufacturer-funded, and none measures clinical events.
- Substituting for actual produce Limited evidence
A dose-response meta-analysis of prospective studies found that higher blood concentrations of antioxidants track with lower cardiovascular and mortality risk, but supplement trials of isolated antioxidants have repeatedly failed to reproduce that benefit. Capsules deliver a fraction of the fibre and none of the food matrix.
