Deer Antler Velvet
Controlled trials in athletes found no gains in aerobic power, strength or hormones beyond training alone. The central marketing claim, that it delivers IGF-1, fails basic pharmacology because IGF-1 is a peptide destroyed by digestion.
What the science says
- Raises IGF-1, testosterone or growth hormone Limited evidence
In 46 male and female rowers given 560 mg/day of elk velvet antler for 10 weeks, there was no difference from placebo in any hormone, at rest or after a simulated 2000 m race. IGF-1 is a 70-amino-acid peptide: swallowed or sprayed under the tongue it is degraded rather than absorbed, so the mechanism claimed on labels cannot operate as described.
- Improves strength and aerobic capacity Limited evidence
Across 38 active men randomised to deer antler velvet extract, powder or placebo alongside 10 weeks of strength training, all groups improved 6RM strength identically (about 41%), with no change in VO2max, red cell mass, plasma volume or erythropoietin. A single isolated isokinetic knee-extensor result favoured the powder group, which the study authors themselves flagged as a likely type I error.
- Supports joints and recovery Limited evidence
Antler velvet contains collagen, chondroitin and glycosaminoglycans, which is the basis for joint claims, but the human trials in arthritis are few, small and inconsistent. Nothing published supports it over far cheaper, better-studied joint ingredients.
