Arachidonic Acid
An omega-6 fatty acid sold to amplify the inflammatory signal that drives training adaptation. The two proper RCTs disagree on muscle and strength outcomes, and deliberately raising arachidonic acid intake carries real trade-offs.
What the science says
- Increases lean mass and strength Limited evidence
The two controlled trials conflict. At 1,500 mg/day for 8 weeks in 30 trained men, lean body mass rose 2.9%, upper-body strength 8.7% and peak power 12.7% in the arachidonic acid group only. At 1,000 mg/day for 50 days in 31 trained men, there were no significant differences from placebo in body composition, bench or leg press 1RM, hormones, or muscle biopsy markers of hypertrophy. The positive study was partially funded by the ingredient's manufacturer.
- Improves anaerobic power output Limited evidence
This is the one outcome both trials agreed on: Wingate relative peak power was significantly higher after supplementation in the 50-day study and 12.7% higher in the 8-week study. It is a narrow endpoint from two small trials, not a broad performance benefit.
- Amplifies the anabolic inflammatory response to training Limited evidence
Four weeks at 1,500 mg/day transiently increased the acute inflammatory response to a resistance exercise bout in trained men, consistent with arachidonic acid being the substrate for prostaglandin synthesis. A larger inflammatory signal is a plausible mechanism, not evidence of better long-term adaptation, and the same trials showed it does not reliably translate into muscle.
