Acerola Cherry

A genuinely vitamin C-dense fruit, sold on the premise that whole-food vitamin C is absorbed better than the synthetic kind. The one head-to-head human study does not show a meaningful advantage.

What the science says

  • No clear absorption advantage over plain vitamin C Limited evidence

    A study in healthy Japanese subjects compared absorption and excretion of ascorbic acid taken alone with the same amount taken as acerola juice. It does not support the large bioavailability advantage that whole-food vitamin C marketing implies.

  • Other benefits are preclinical Limited evidence

    A review of acerola's anti-inflammatory activity described effects demonstrated largely in cell and animal models, with polyphenols and carotenoids as the proposed actives. No clinical trial has tested acerola for infection or inflammation outcomes in people.

  • The vitamin C itself is what works Moderate evidence

    Whatever benefit acerola offers for colds is the benefit of vitamin C, which has its own trial literature — modest reductions in cold duration with regular supplementation, no reliable effect on catching colds. Acerola is a delivery vehicle, not a separate active.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseEnough powder or extract to supply 100–500 mg of vitamin C per day. Acerola powders are commonly standardised to 17–25 percent ascorbic acid, so check the actual vitamin C figure rather than the powder weight.
SafetyAs tolerable as vitamin C generally: doses above roughly 1 g per day cause gastrointestinal upset and osmotic diarrhoea, and high intakes raise urinary oxalate, which is relevant for people prone to kidney stones. Avoid large doses in haemochromatosis, since vitamin C increases iron absorption. Acerola allergy is rare but reported.
