Elderberry

A best-selling immune remedy. Small older trials suggested shorter colds and flu, but the largest recent trial found no effect — evidence is genuinely mixed.

What the science says

  • Shortening colds and flu Limited evidence

A meta-analysis of small randomized trials found elderberry substantially reduced upper respiratory symptom duration. However, the largest and most rigorous trial to date (in influenza patients) found no benefit versus placebo, so the question remains open.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseStudies used standardized extracts or syrups (e.g. 15 ml syrup 4x/day during illness); commercial products vary widely in actual elderberry content.
SafetyCommercial extracts are safe short-term. Raw or unripe berries, leaves, and bark are toxic (cyanogenic glycosides) — never consume homemade preparations that aren't properly cooked.
