What the science says
- Extensively reviewed, clinically untested Limited evidence
A systematic review of the genus Lonicera covering chemistry and pharmacology catalogued anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial activities almost entirely from cell and animal experiments, with no controlled trials of the single herb for respiratory infection.
- Anti-inflammatory effects in animal lung models Limited evidence
A systematic review of Lonicera japonica in acute lung injury summarised multi-target anti-inflammatory mechanisms demonstrated in rodent models. Animal lung-injury models are a long way from a person with a cold.
