Chicken Essence
A concentrated, fat-free chicken broth extract popular across East and Southeast Asia. A meta-analysis of randomized trials found small improvements in cognitive test performance; claims about fatigue and recovery are much weaker.

What the science says
- Cognitive performance Moderate evidence
A systematically searched meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials concluded that daily consumption of essence of chicken improves cognitive function, mainly on short-term memory and attention tasks. Effects were small and most trials were funded by manufacturers.
- Memory in middle-aged adults Limited evidence
A randomized double-blind trial of a hydrolysed chicken extract in healthy middle-aged people reported gains on some memory measures but not others. It was a single trial with a modest sample.
- Physical recovery and joint function Limited evidence
A four-arm randomized pilot study of chicken essence and type II collagen hydrolysate on joint, bone and muscle function was exploratory and underpowered for firm conclusions. Fatigue-recovery claims rest largely on animal work.
