Calamari Oil

Squid-derived oil with a high DHA-to-EPA ratio. No trial has tested calamari oil on its own against placebo; what is known applies to high-DHA oils as a class.

What the science says

  • Effects of high-DHA oils Limited evidence

    A systematic review of high-DHA fish oils, which explicitly includes calamari oil among the newer sources, found supportive but inconsistent evidence for heart, cardiovascular and brain function, and noted that DHA and EPA have different and sometimes complementary effects. The review does not isolate calamari oil.

  • Calamari oil in a combination product Limited evidence

    A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a hemp oil, calamari oil and broccoli combination reported reductions in pain and oxidative stress markers. Calamari oil was one of three ingredients, so nothing can be concluded about it alone.

  • Sustainability and DHA density Limited evidence

    Calamari oil does provide more DHA per gram than typical fish oil, which is a formulation fact rather than a demonstrated health advantage; no head-to-head trial shows better outcomes than an equivalent dose of DHA from another source.

Studied doseNo trial-established dose. Products typically supply 300–500 mg DHA per capsule; judge them on total DHA and EPA rather than on the source.
SafetySimilar to other marine oils: fishy aftertaste, reflux and loose stools, and mildly increased bleeding time at doses above roughly 3 g/day, which matters with anticoagulants and before surgery. Not for people with shellfish or mollusc allergy. Marine oils oxidise readily, and independent testing has found rancidity common across omega-3 supplements, so check freshness and third-party testing.
