Wheat Dextrin
A cheap, tasteless soluble fiber sold for regularity. It is almost completely fermented in the colon, so it adds little stool bulk — the evidence that it relieves constipation is weak compared with psyllium.

What the science says
- Laxative effect Limited evidence
An evidence-based review of fiber physiology argues that wheat dextrin is non-viscous and rapidly fermented, and therefore does not produce the water-holding stool bulk that drives the laxative effect of psyllium. No large randomized trial supports it as a laxative.
- Satiety and glycemia Limited evidence
A randomized study of resistant dextrin in healthy adults found little effect on satiety and only minor changes in glycemic endpoints.
- Mineral absorption Moderate evidence
A controlled study in premenopausal and postmenopausal women showed that chronic wheat dextrin supplementation did not impair calcium or magnesium absorption, which is a reassuring safety finding rather than a benefit.
