Tart Cherry
Montmorency tart cherry has a legitimate, meta-analysed benefit for recovery of muscle strength after hard exercise — small but real. Its popular use as a natural melatonin sleep aid is supported only by tiny pilot studies with marginal effects.
What the science says
- Speeds recovery of muscle function after strenuous exercise Moderate evidence
A systematic review and meta-analysis of tart cherry supplementation found a small but statistically significant benefit for recovery of muscular strength and power in the 24-96 hours after damaging exercise. Effects on perceived soreness were smaller and effects on inflammatory and oxidative-stress markers were inconsistent across studies.
- Improves sleep Limited evidence
In a pilot study of 15 older adults with insomnia, 240 mL of tart cherry juice twice daily for 2 weeks produced a modest reduction in minutes awake after sleep onset, with no change in sleep latency or total sleep time. Tart cherries contain melatonin, but at doses far below a typical melatonin tablet, so any hypnotic effect is likely small.
- Modestly improves cardio-metabolic markers Moderate evidence
A meta-analysis of randomised trials found tart cherry juice reduced systolic blood pressure and C-reactive protein by small amounts, with less consistent effects on lipids and glucose. These are surrogate markers over short trials, not demonstrated cardiovascular outcomes.
- Reduces gout attacks Limited evidence
Cherry intake lowers serum urate modestly and observational data associate it with fewer gout flares, but there is no adequately powered randomised trial. It should not replace urate-lowering therapy.
