What the science says

  • Digestive use Limited evidence

A systematic review of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium covering its phytochemistry, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics finds the digestive effects documented in animal and in vitro models rather than in clinical trials.

  • Gut microbiota Limited evidence

A review of its effects on gut microbiota describes shifts in bacterial composition, largely from animal experiments. No human trial has linked those shifts to symptom relief.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTraditional decoctions use 3–10 g of aged peel per day, usually as part of a formula. No trial-based dose exists.
SafetyCulinary amounts are safe. Concentrated citrus peel extracts may interact with drugs metabolised by CYP3A4. Do not confuse chen pi with bitter orange (synephrine) products, which have cardiovascular risks. Little data in pregnancy.
