Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is a decent culinary oil with a favorable omega-6 to omega-3 ratio and some gamma-linolenic acid, but it contains no CBD and no EPA or DHA. The small trials that exist show minor skin and lipid effects — it is food, not a therapeutic supplement.
What the science says
- Improves atopic dermatitis symptoms Limited evidence
In a randomized crossover trial, 30 g/day of hempseed oil for 8 weeks reduced dryness, itchiness and dermal medication use in atopic dermatitis patients compared with olive oil, alongside increases in plasma linoleic and gamma-linolenic acid. It is one small trial with subjective endpoints and no replication, and other GLA-rich oils (evening primrose, borage) have failed to show consistent eczema benefit in larger meta-analyses.
- Improves blood lipids Limited evidence
A randomized trial comparing hempseed oil with flaxseed oil found shifts in fatty-acid profiles but no meaningful advantage in total or LDL cholesterol; flaxseed oil produced larger increases in ALA and some lipoprotein changes. Hemp seed oil is a reasonable fat to cook with, but no trial supports it as a cholesterol treatment.
- Provides omega-3 benefits like fish oil Limited evidence
Hemp seed oil supplies about 15–20% alpha-linolenic acid and roughly a 3:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, which is better than most seed oils. But ALA converts to EPA at only about 5–10% and to DHA at under 1% in most adults, and less in men — so hemp oil is not a substitute for fish or algal omega-3 if EPA/DHA is what you want.
- Contains CBD or cannabinoids Limited evidence
Cold-pressed hemp seed oil is made from the seed, which contains negligible cannabinoids; any residual THC or CBD comes from trace contamination during processing. Products marketed as 'hemp oil' for anxiety or pain that list only hemp seed oil in the ingredients contain no active cannabinoid at all — a common and often deliberate labeling confusion.
