Cell Salts (Tissue Salts)
Schuessler cell salts are twelve mineral compounds sold in homeopathic 6X dilutions, which deliver micrograms of mineral per tablet — thousands of times below any nutritionally relevant dose. There are essentially no controlled trials, and the underlying 1870s theory of disease has no modern support.
What the science says
- The mineral dose is nutritionally meaningless Strong evidence
A 6X (D6) dilution is 1 part in 1,000,000, so a 250 mg lactose tablet of Ferrum phosphoricum 6X contains roughly 0.25 micrograms of iron — against an adult RDA of 8-18 mg, i.e. tens of thousands of times less. The same arithmetic applies to Calcarea phosphorica, Magnesia phosphorica, and Kali phosphoricum. If you have a genuine deficiency, cell salts cannot correct it; a standard mineral supplement can.
- The founding theory is obsolete Limited evidence
Wilhelm Schuessler proposed in 1873 that all disease results from imbalance of twelve inorganic 'tissue salts' identified in the ash of cremated human tissue, correctable by minute doses. Modern physiology attributes disease to infection, genetics, immune dysfunction, neoplasia, and metabolic derangement — mineral status is one variable among many, and the twelve-salt scheme has no diagnostic or therapeutic basis. Facial diagnosis, used to select salts, has never been validated.
- Controlled evidence is effectively absent Limited evidence
Cell salts have almost no indexed randomized controlled trials for any indication; the few homeopathic combination trials that exist are small and at high risk of bias. The broader body of homeopathy evidence is instructive: a comparative analysis of 110 homeopathy trials versus 110 matched conventional trials found homeopathy's apparent effects vanished as methodological quality and sample size improved.
- 'Biochemic' branding blurs the line with nutrition Limited evidence
These products are often shelved beside genuine mineral supplements and carry names that read as minerals — Natrum muriaticum is table salt, Silicea is silica. Consumers reasonably assume they are buying a mineral supplement. They are buying a homeopathic dilution, and the label potency (6X, 12X) is the tell.
