Adaptogen Blends

Multi-herb formulas built around ashwagandha, rhodiola, eleuthero and similar plants. Some individual ingredients have decent trial support, but the blends as sold are rarely tested as blends.

Evidence last reviewed: August 2026

What the science says

  • Individual adaptogens for stress symptoms Moderate evidence

A systematic review of Withania somnifera and Rhodiola rosea found consistent reductions in perceived stress and anxiety scores across randomized trials, and a separate meta-analysis in people with mental disorders found ashwagandha improved anxiety and depression measures. Trials were mostly small, short and heterogeneous in extract and dose.

  • Tested fixed combinations Limited evidence

A randomized, quadruple-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a fixed rhodiola-schisandra-eleuthero preparation in patients with long COVID reported faster symptom recovery. This is one trial of one specific formula and does not generalize to other blends.

  • Proprietary multi-herb formulas Limited evidence

Most commercial adaptogen blends combine five or more herbs at doses well below those used in the positive single-ingredient trials, and have no published human data of their own.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseNo dose applies to blends as a class. Where a blend is used, check that it delivers a studied amount of at least one ingredient — for example 300–600 mg/day of a standardized ashwagandha root extract, or 200–400 mg/day of rhodiola.
SafetyDepends entirely on the ingredients. Ashwagandha has been linked to case reports of liver injury and can raise thyroid hormone levels; rhodiola may cause agitation and insomnia; licorice, common in these blends, can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. Multi-herb formulas make interactions harder to predict — avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding, autoimmune thyroid disease and with immunosuppressants unless cleared by a clinician.
