Thyroid Support Formulas
This is one of the most dangerous categories on the shelf: independent testing found most over-the-counter thyroid supplements contain actual thyroid hormone, at doses capable of causing thyrotoxicosis. There is no evidence any of them help a healthy thyroid, and the iodine loads they carry can trigger thyroid disease.
What the science says
- Most products tested contained real T3 and T4 Strong evidence
In an analysis of ten commercially available thyroid health supplements, nine contained detectable triiodothyronine (T3) and five contained thyroxine (T4). At the recommended serving, some products delivered up to roughly 91 mcg of T3 and 25 mcg of T4 per day — comparable to or exceeding prescription doses, and enough to cause iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis in an unsuspecting user.
- Iodine and kelp doses routinely exceed the safe upper limit Moderate evidence
Formulas commonly supply 150-15,000 mcg of iodine per serving, against a tolerable upper intake level of 1,100 mcg/day for adults. Excess iodine can precipitate both hypothyroidism (failure to escape the Wolff-Chaikoff effect) and hyperthyroidism (Jod-Basedow), particularly in people with nodular goiter or autoimmune thyroid disease.
- Selenium reduces thyroid antibodies but not symptoms Moderate evidence
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials in Hashimoto thyroiditis found selenium supplementation, typically 80-200 mcg/day for 3-12 months, lowered TPO antibody titres but did not consistently improve thyroid hormone levels, levothyroxine requirement or quality of life. Antibody titres are a lab number, not an outcome patients feel.
- No evidence for boosting a normal thyroid Limited evidence
There are no randomized trials showing that tyrosine, ashwagandha, guggul, bovine thyroid glandular or B-vitamin blends improve energy, metabolism or weight in people with normal thyroid function. Fatigue and weight gain have many causes; the correct first step is a TSH test, not a supplement.
