Suma (Brazilian Ginseng)
Sold as a 'Russian secret' anabolic because it contains ecdysteroids, but a typical 500 mg capsule delivers only a few milligrams of them — far below the doses used in the one human ecdysterone trial. No human study of suma root itself has ever been published.
What the science says

The anabolic story rests entirely on 20-hydroxyecdysone (beta-ecdysone) content. Pfaffia roots contain roughly 0.3-2% ecdysteroids depending on species and growing conditions, so a 500 mg capsule delivers about 1.5-10 mg — while the widely cited positive human ecdysterone trial used around 800 mg per day of the isolated compound. Matching that from root powder would require tens of grams daily. Whatever you think of the ecdysterone evidence, suma capsules do not deliver a comparable dose.

A comprehensive 2024 review of Pfaffia glomerata botany, ethnopharmacology, and pharmacology catalogues traditional use as a tonic and aphrodisiac alongside in vitro and rodent findings — and no human clinical trials. There is no measured effect on cortisol, fatigue scales, mood, or sexual function in people.

Phytochemical work on Pfaffia paniculata has isolated pfaffic acid derivatives and other nortriterpenoid saponins that are genuinely unusual and distinguish suma from Panax ginseng, with which it shares no botanical relationship. Interesting chemistry does not equal a clinical effect, and none of these compounds has been tested in humans.
