Melatonin Gummies

A chewable delivery format for melatonin, whose modest effect on falling asleep is reasonably well documented. The concern specific to gummies is not efficacy but dose accuracy — analyses have found the actual melatonin content often differs substantially from the label.

What the science says

  • Shorter time to fall asleep Moderate evidence

A meta-analysis of 19 studies of melatonin in primary sleep disorders found a reduction in sleep latency of about 7 minutes and a small increase in total sleep time. The effect is consistent across trials but modest in size, and this evidence is for melatonin as a molecule rather than for the gummy format.

  • Label accuracy of the gummy format Moderate evidence

A JAMA analysis of melatonin gummy products sold in the US found that actual melatonin content deviated from the labelled amount in most products tested, with some containing several times the stated dose, and one containing no melatonin at all. This matters most for gummies given to children.

  • Chewable format changes absorption Limited evidence

No trial has compared gummies head to head with tablets or capsules for sleep outcomes. Buccal and gastric absorption differences are plausible but untested in humans for this endpoint.

Dosage & safety

Studied dose0.5–5 mg taken 30–60 minutes before bed; lower doses generally perform as well as higher ones. Gummies commonly carry 5–10 mg, which is more than most trials used — check the label and consider splitting.
SafetyShort-term use is well tolerated; daytime grogginess, headache and vivid dreams are the usual complaints. Gummies are the main source of paediatric melatonin overdose calls to poison centres, so keep them out of children's reach and treat them as medicine, not candy. Sugar alcohols in gummies can cause bloating. Avoid combining with sedatives or alcohol; discuss with a clinician if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking anticoagulants or immunosuppressants.
