Marine Collagen

Fish-derived type I collagen peptides perform about as well as bovine peptides for modest gains in skin hydration and elasticity — the format is legitimate, but the "marine is more bioavailable" marketing rests on molecular-weight arguments, not head-to-head human trials.

What the science says

  • Improves skin hydration and elasticity Moderate evidence

    A meta-analysis of 19 RCTs (1,125 participants, 95% women) using 2.5-10 g/day of hydrolyzed collagen for 8-24 weeks found significant improvements in skin hydration and elasticity versus placebo. A fish-derived low-molecular-weight peptide at 1,000 mg/day for 12 weeks improved hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth in a double-blind trial of 64 women. Effects are real but cosmetic in size, and most trials are industry-funded.

  • Marine collagen is better absorbed than bovine collagen Limited evidence

    Marine peptides do tend to have lower average molecular weight (often 1-3 kDa vs 2-5 kDa for bovine), and low-molecular-weight fractions appear in plasma as Pro-Hyp dipeptides more readily. But no head-to-head RCT has shown marine peptides produce better skin, joint or bone outcomes than bovine peptides at the same dose. The premium price is not supported by comparative efficacy data.

  • Builds joint cartilage or reverses arthritis Limited evidence

    Marine collagen is almost entirely type I (skin, bone, tendon), while articular cartilage is type II. Trials of hydrolyzed collagen in osteoarthritis are small and heterogeneous, and marine-specific joint trials are rare. If joints are the goal, undenatured type II collagen at 40 mg/day has a more direct evidence base.

Dosage & safety

Studied dose2.5-10 g/day of hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides; the most common studied skin dose is 2.5-5 g/day for at least 8-12 weeks. Low-molecular-weight fish peptides have shown effects at 1-1.5 g/day. Benefits fade within weeks of stopping, so it is an ongoing cost, not a course.
SafetyGenerally well tolerated; mild GI upset, fullness or an aftertaste are the usual complaints. Contraindicated in fish and shellfish allergy — marine collagen is a fish protein and cross-reactivity is documented. Collagen is not a complete protein (no tryptophan), so it should not replace dietary protein. Heavy-metal accumulation is a theoretical concern with fish-skin/scale sourcing; look for third-party tested products. No banned-substance issues in sport.
