Maral Root
A Siberian ecdysterone source with a Soviet sports-science legend behind it and almost no modern human data. The one relevant trial used isolated ecdysterone, not maral root — and found the capsules contained a fraction of what the label claimed.
What the science says

Rhaponticum carthamoides (Leuzea, maral root) is one of the richest botanical sources of 20-hydroxyecdysone and related ecdysteroids, documented across decades of phytochemical work and used in the Soviet Union as the preparation Ecdisten. That much is well characterised. What is not characterised is how much ecdysterone any given commercial root extract actually delivers, since standardisation claims range widely and are rarely verified.
- Muscle and strength gains Limited evidence
The best human data is a 10-week resistance-training study in 46 young men using ecdysterone capsules — not maral root. Participants receiving ecdysterone showed significantly greater increases in muscle mass and in one-repetition-maximum bench press, with no rise in liver or kidney markers. Two important caveats: it is a single study with modest group sizes, and analysis of the supplement found the capsules contained substantially less ecdysterone than labelled, so the effective dose is unknown. The authors recommended WADA add ecdysterone to the prohibited list.
- Adaptogen, endurance and 'anti-fatigue' claims Limited evidence
Most endurance and work-capacity claims trace to Soviet-era research that is unblinded, poorly reported, and largely unavailable in indexed peer-reviewed form. Modern reviews of R. carthamoides pharmacology describe adaptogenic, anabolic and antioxidant activity almost entirely from animal experiments. No placebo-controlled trial of maral root itself for endurance, recovery or stress exists.
