What the science says

  • Symptom relief in hemorrhoidal disease Moderate evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis of micronized purified flavonoid fraction found reduced bleeding, pain and itching, and lower recurrence, versus control. Many of the trials were industry-sponsored and of moderate quality.

  • Recovery after hemorrhoid surgery Moderate evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis of flavonoids and post-haemorrhoidectomy recovery reported less post-operative bleeding and pain. Effect sizes were modest and heterogeneity between trials was substantial.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseThe studied regimen is 1000–3000 mg per day of micronized diosmin/hesperidin: often 3000 mg daily for the first four days of an acute episode, then 2000 mg for three days, then 1000 mg daily. Supplement blends frequently contain unmicronized diosmin at lower doses.
SafetyUsually well tolerated; stomach upset and diarrhoea are the main effects. Not established in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Rectal bleeding needs medical assessment first, since it can indicate colorectal disease rather than hemorrhoids.
