Chyawanprash

A traditional Ayurvedic herbal jam built around amla, taken daily for general vitality and immunity. Two small trials exist; both are weak in design and neither measured infections.

What the science says

  • Open-label trial in healthy children Limited evidence

A two-arm, randomized, open-label, multicentre study in healthy children reported improvements in immunity-related and quality-of-life measures over the study period. The absence of blinding and placebo, together with subjective endpoints, makes the result difficult to interpret.

  • Metabolic effects in a small trial Limited evidence

A randomized trial comparing chyawanprash with vitamin C examined glucose tolerance and lipoprotein profile in healthy volunteers. It was small, addressed metabolic rather than immune outcomes, and has not been followed up.

  • No infection endpoints anywhere Limited evidence

Despite the product being marketed for resistance to colds and seasonal illness, no trial has measured incidence or duration of respiratory infection.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTraditional use is 12–15 g (about one tablespoon) once or twice daily, usually in the morning, often with warm milk.
SafetyThe base is sugar or jaggery and ghee — a tablespoon is a meaningful sugar and calorie load, which matters in diabetes. Ayurvedic preparations have a documented history of heavy metal and pesticide contamination in some markets, so third-party testing is worth checking. Contains multiple herbs, so interactions are difficult to predict; discuss with a clinician if you take regular medication.
