Bovine Cartilage
Dried cattle cartilage, sold as a whole-food source of collagen and glycosaminoglycans for joints. The scientific literature on it is mostly 1960s surgical work on wound healing and laboratory chemistry; there are no modern controlled trials of oral bovine cartilage for joint pain.

What the science says
- Joint pain and osteoarthritis Limited evidence
PubMed indexes no randomized controlled trial of oral bovine cartilage for osteoarthritis or joint symptoms. Trials exist for isolated cartilage components such as glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen peptides, but those results do not transfer to an undefined whole-cartilage powder.
- Wound healing, the original research use Limited evidence
The historical case for cartilage came from mid-twentieth-century experimental work, such as Prudden's reports that cartilage preparations reversed steroid-induced inhibition of wound healing. This was animal and surgical work with injected or applied preparations, not oral supplementation.
- Immune effects in the laboratory Limited evidence
A cell study comparing commercial cartilage extracts found that cartilage preparations, bovine included, induced inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha in human leukocytes. The authors noted this argues against use in conditions driven by inflammation, though cell data cannot predict what happens after digestion.
