What the science says

  • Symptom relief with micronised purified flavonoid fraction Moderate evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials across all stages of chronic venous disease found MPFF reduced leg pain, heaviness, swelling and cramps, with parallel improvements in quality-of-life scores.

  • Horse chestnut reduces leg oedema Moderate evidence

A Cochrane review of 17 randomised trials found horse chestnut seed extract reduced leg pain, oedema and itching versus placebo, though the trials were mostly small and short.

  • Generic blends are not the tested product Limited evidence

Multi-ingredient vein formulas rarely match the standardised extracts and doses used in trials, and have not been tested in that combined form.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseMicronised purified flavonoid fraction: 1000 mg/day of diosmin plus hesperidin. Horse chestnut: extract standardised to 50 mg escin, twice daily. A blend should declare these standardisations to be comparable.
SafetyUsually well tolerated; GI upset, headache and dizziness occur. Raw horse chestnut seed is toxic — only processed, escin-standardised extract is used. Not established in pregnancy. Persistent leg swelling needs a medical diagnosis, since it can indicate deep vein thrombosis or heart failure.
