What the science says

  • Symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency Moderate evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis of hydroxyethylrutosides found improvement in pain, cramps, restless legs and swelling versus placebo in chronic venous insufficiency. Many included trials were older, small and industry-sponsored.

  • Place among venoactive treatments Moderate evidence

A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of pharmacological interventions for chronic venous insufficiency includes hydroxyethylrutosides among the agents with measurable symptomatic benefit. No venoactive drug reverses the underlying vein disease, and compression remains first-line.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTypical studied dose is 1000–2000 mg per day (often 500 mg two to four times daily) for 4–12 weeks, then a maintenance dose.
SafetyUsually well tolerated; headache, flushing, digestive upset and rash are reported. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy. It treats symptoms only, so leg swelling of new onset, ulceration or suspected deep vein thrombosis needs medical assessment rather than a supplement.
