Suan Zao Ren Tang

The classic Chinese insomnia decoction, built around sour jujube seed. Meta-analyses report benefit, but they pool small trials with weak methods and inconsistent preparations, so the true effect size is unknown.

What the science says

  • Chronic insomnia Limited evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis of Suanzaoren Decoction for chronic insomnia reported improved sleep quality scores versus control. The included trials were small, largely Chinese-language, and rated as having methodological limitations that make the pooled estimate unreliable.

  • Comparison with other herbal formulas Limited evidence

A network meta-analysis of Chinese herbal medicine for insomnia places Suan Zao Ren Tang among the better-ranked formulas, but the underlying trial pool is the same low-quality literature and comparisons against modern hypnotics or CBT-I are largely absent.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTraditionally a decoction of the five-herb formula; commercial granules and pills typically supply around 6–9 g/day in divided doses. Trial preparations differ considerably, so label doses are not comparable across products.
SafetyGenerally described as mild in traditional use, but it contains liquorice, which with prolonged use can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. Sedative effects may add to alcohol, benzodiazepines and antihistamines. Quality control of imported patent medicines is inconsistent, with documented cases of pharmaceutical adulteration in the wider category. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding without qualified supervision, and see a clinician for insomnia lasting more than a few weeks.
