Polygonatum (Huang Jing)

Solomon's seal rhizome, a Chinese tonic used for fatigue and dryness, rich in polysaccharides and steroidal saponins. The pharmacology literature is large but almost entirely preclinical; controlled human trials are missing.

Evidence last reviewed: August 2026

What the science says

  • Energy and anti-fatigue tonic effects Limited evidence

A comprehensive 2026 review of the genus Polygonatum catalogues anti-fatigue, hypoglycaemic and immunomodulatory activities reported in cell and rodent models. The review does not identify randomized human trials supporting the traditional tonic use.

  • Immune and gut effects of the polysaccharides Limited evidence

A review of Polygonatum polysaccharides describes gut microbiota modulation and short-chain fatty acid mediated effects, all demonstrated in animals and in vitro. Whether any of this translates to people is untested.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTraditional decoctions use 9–15 g of dried processed rhizome daily; extract capsules are typically 500 mg once or twice daily. Neither has trial support.
SafetyRaw rhizome is irritating to the throat and mucous membranes and is traditionally steamed before use. Digestive upset is the main reported complaint. Little is known about long-term use, drug interactions, or safety in pregnancy, so avoid it there.
