Papaya Leaf Extract

Papaya leaf extract raises platelet counts in dengue fever faster than placebo across several randomized trials. Whether that translates into fewer bleeding events or shorter hospital stays remains unproven.

What the science says

  • Platelet recovery in dengue Moderate evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found faster platelet count recovery with Carica papaya leaf extract in dengue. Most included trials were small and conducted in a single region, with notable risk of bias.

  • Clinical outcomes in dengue Limited evidence

A multi-centre double-blind placebo-controlled trial confirmed the platelet effect but was not powered for bleeding, hospital stay or mortality. No trial has yet shown a change in hard clinical outcomes.

  • Thrombocytopenia from other causes Limited evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia found only a small, low-quality body of evidence. The dengue findings should not be assumed to carry over.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTrials used standardized leaf extract capsules, commonly around 1100 mg/day, or 25 mL of leaf juice twice daily, for about 5 days.
SafetyShort-term use in trials was well tolerated, with occasional nausea and a bitter taste. It is not a substitute for medical care in dengue, which requires monitoring; avoid in pregnancy (animal data suggest uterine effects) and alongside anticoagulants.
