Oscillococcinum
Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic flu product diluted to 200C — a factor of 10 to the power of 400 — meaning no molecule of the starting material remains. Cochrane reviewers concluded the evidence does not support any benefit for preventing or treating influenza-like illness.
What the science says
- Cochrane found insufficient evidence of any effect Limited evidence
The Cochrane review identified 6 trials (2 prevention, n=327; 4 treatment, n=1,196) and concluded there was no evidence that Oscillococcinum prevents influenza-like illness, and that treatment evidence was too low-quality to draw conclusions. The two prevention trials found no difference from placebo. Reviewers rated the treatment trials at high or unclear risk of bias with poor reporting.
- The dilution leaves nothing to act Strong evidence
The product is prepared from an autolysate of Muscovy duck heart and liver diluted 1:100 serially 200 times (200CK). Avogadro's limit is passed after about 12 serial 1:100 dilutions; a 200C preparation would require a volume of solvent vastly exceeding the observable universe to contain one original molecule. Each pellet is therefore sucrose and lactose. Any claimed mechanism requires physics for which there is no evidence.
- The founding premise was mistaken Limited evidence
Oscillococcinum was created in 1925 by Joseph Roy, who believed he had seen an oscillating bacterium — 'Oscillococcus' — in the blood of flu patients and in many other diseases. No such organism exists; the observation was almost certainly artefact. Influenza was shown to be viral in 1933, and the product's name and source material were never revised.
- Placebo response explains reported symptom relief Strong evidence
A large comparative analysis of 110 homeopathy trials matched to 110 conventional-medicine trials found that as trial quality and size improved, homeopathy's apparent effect shrank toward null, consistent with bias and placebo effects rather than a specific action. Influenza-like illness is self-limiting over 3-7 days and highly susceptible to expectancy effects, which is exactly the setting where an inert product looks effective.

Frequently asked questions
Does Oscillococcinum work for the flu?
No reliable evidence says Oscillococcinum works. The Cochrane review found no evidence that it prevents influenza-like illness and judged the treatment trials too low-quality to draw conclusions; the evidence grade is limited.
What is actually in Oscillococcinum?
Oscillococcinum starts from an extract of Muscovy duck heart and liver diluted 1:100 two hundred times (200C), far past the point where any original molecule remains. Each pellet is effectively sucrose and lactose.
Is Oscillococcinum safe?
Oscillococcinum pellets are inert sucrose and lactose and are physically safe, with trial adverse events similar to placebo. The real risk is using it instead of vaccination, antivirals started within 48 hours, or medical care if you are in a high-risk group.
Why do people feel better after taking Oscillococcinum?
Influenza-like illness is self-limiting over 3-7 days and highly susceptible to expectancy effects, so recovery after taking Oscillococcinum is expected with or without it. Analyses of homeopathy trials show apparent effects shrink toward zero as trial quality improves.
