Oral EDTA
A genuine chelating agent, sold in capsules for "metal detox" and artery cleaning. Intravenous EDTA has been tested properly and failed; the oral form is poorly absorbed and has never been shown to lower body metal burden or improve any clinical outcome.

What the science says
- Cardiovascular benefit Moderate evidence
TACT2, a large randomised trial of intravenous edetate disodium chelation in people with previous myocardial infarction and diabetes, found no reduction in cardiovascular events. This is high-quality evidence against the strongest version of the chelation hypothesis, using the more potent intravenous route.
- Removing heavy metals by mouth Limited evidence
EDTA is a charged molecule with very poor oral bioavailability, and reviews of the scientific basis for chelation describe efficacy in terms of parenteral dosing regimens in animals and patients. No trial shows that oral EDTA capsules meaningfully reduce blood or tissue lead.
- Chelation for developmental and "toxicity" symptoms Moderate evidence
A Cochrane review of chelation for autism spectrum disorder found no supporting evidence and recorded serious harms. Chelation given for vague symptoms rather than confirmed poisoning has consistently failed to help and has caused deaths.
