Kelp (Iodine Source)
Kelp is a real source of iodine, but an unreliable one — content varies enormously between batches and label accuracy is poor. If you need iodine, potassium iodide or iodized salt is the safer, dose-controlled choice; kelp's main documented effect in adequately nourished people is pushing TSH up.
What the science says
- Correcting iodine deficiency Limited evidence
Iodine itself unambiguously prevents goiter and cretinism, but kelp is a poor delivery vehicle: iodine content in seaweed varies by more than 100-fold across species and harvests, and analyses of commercial kelp products repeatedly find actual iodine well above or below the label. Trials of iodine repletion use standardized potassium iodide or iodized oil, not kelp.
- Thyroid function in people who are not deficient Moderate evidence
In a randomized trial in euthyroid adults, kelp tablets supplying several hundred micrograms up to roughly 1 mg of iodine daily raised TSH significantly within 4 weeks compared with placebo — a move toward subclinical hypothyroidism, not a benefit. Reviews of excess iodine intake document both iodine-induced hypothyroidism and, in susceptible people, thyrotoxicosis.
- Metabolism, energy and weight loss Limited evidence
Kelp is marketed as a metabolic or "thyroid support" aid. There is no controlled evidence that iodine raises metabolic rate or aids weight loss in people with normal thyroid function; thyroid hormone output is not iodine-limited once intake is adequate.
- Heavy metal and arsenic exposure Moderate evidence
Brown seaweeds concentrate metals from seawater. Hijiki in particular carries high inorganic arsenic — enough that food safety agencies in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand advise against eating it — and cadmium and lead have been found in kelp supplements. This is a documented risk of chronic use, not a theoretical one.
