Jamun (Java Plum)

Syzygium cumini fruit and seed powder, one of the best known Ayurvedic remedies for diabetes. The antidiabetic evidence is almost entirely from rodents; no adequate randomized trial in people with type 2 diabetes appears in PubMed.

Evidence last reviewed: August 2026

What the science says

  • Blood glucose lowering Limited evidence

A triterpenoid-enriched jamun fruit extract lowered glucose and lipids in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. Rodent diabetes models frequently show effects that do not reproduce in human trials.

  • Traditional antidiabetic use Limited evidence

A systematic review of ethnomedicinal plants used for diabetes worldwide lists Syzygium cumini among the most frequently cited species. Frequency of traditional use documents popularity, not efficacy.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTraditional use is 1–3 g of dried seed powder once or twice daily before meals; capsules are usually sold at 500 mg. No dose has been validated in a controlled human trial.
SafetyThe fruit is a common food and safe as such. Concentrated seed powder may lower blood glucose, so combining it with insulin or antidiabetic drugs risks hypoglycaemia, and it is often advised to stop it before surgery. Avoid in pregnancy. It should never replace prescribed diabetes treatment.
