Blue Lotus

An Egyptian water lily (Nymphaea caerulea) sold as a relaxing tea or vape, with claims built almost entirely on ancient iconography. No clinical trial exists, and product analyses have found significant quality and adulteration problems.

Evidence last reviewed: August 2026

What the science says

  • Relaxant or euphoriant effect Limited evidence

A chemical composition and market survey study characterised commercial blue lotus extracts and found the alkaloids nuciferine and apomorphine present at low and highly variable concentrations. No human trial has measured relaxation, anxiety or sleep outcomes with blue lotus.

  • Product quality and adulteration Moderate evidence

The same market survey found wide variation between products and raised safety questions about unregulated blue lotus preparations. Separately, forensic analysis identified synthetic cannabinoids in vaping products marketed as blue lotus and valerian root, meaning the psychoactive effects users report may come from undeclared additives.

  • Use as a sleep aid Limited evidence

There are no controlled data on sleep latency or sleep quality with blue lotus in humans. Its reputation rests on Egyptian art and modern marketing rather than measured outcomes.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseNo studied dose. Products vary enormously in alkaloid content, so any label dose is essentially arbitrary and not comparable between brands.
SafetyNot established as safe. Apomorphine content means nausea, vomiting, hypotension and sedation are plausible effects, and dopaminergic activity raises interaction concerns with antipsychotics, antiemetics and Parkinson's medication. Vaping products sold under this name have been found to contain synthetic cannabinoids. It is legally restricted in some jurisdictions. Avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding, and if driving or operating machinery.
