Moderate evidenceGut health

Bifidobacterium Longum

A dominant species of the adult and infant colon with genuinely interesting gut-brain data for two specific strains (NCC3001 and 1714), but the generic "B. longum" in most capsules has not been shown to do what those strains did. Strain designation is the entire story here.

What the science says

  • Reduces depression scores in people with IBS (strain NCC3001) Moderate evidence

In a 10-week double-blind RCT of 44 IBS patients with mild-to-moderate anxiety or depression, B. longum NCC3001 at 1 billion CFU/day produced a >=2-point drop in HAD depression score in 64% of the probiotic group vs 32% on placebo, alongside reduced amygdala and fronto-limbic reactivity on fMRI. Anxiety scores and IBS symptom scores did not differ significantly, and the sample was small — this is a promising pilot, not a settled result.

  • Improves overall IBS symptoms Moderate evidence

The 2023 systematic review of 82 probiotic RCTs in IBS found benefit for the category overall, with Bifidobacterium-containing combinations among the better-supported options, though certainty of evidence was low for nearly every individual strain. Expect a modest reduction in global symptoms rather than remission.

  • Blunts the stress response in healthy adults (strain 1714) Limited evidence

Small trials of B. longum 1714 in healthy volunteers reported reduced cortisol output and subjective anxiety during acute stress tasks, with n typically under 40 and no replication by independent groups. Treat this as hypothesis-generating.

  • Any B. longum product delivers these effects Limited evidence

No. Effects documented for NCC3001 and 1714 have not been demonstrated for unnamed B. longum in generic multi-strain blends, and species-level labeling is not evidence of strain-level equivalence.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseTrials used 1-10 billion CFU/day of a named strain for 4-12 weeks; NCC3001 was studied at 1 billion CFU/day for 10 weeks and 1714 at roughly 1 billion CFU/day for 4 weeks. Bifidobacteria are oxygen-sensitive, so prefer blister-packed or refrigerated products with a CFU-at-expiry guarantee. Effects reverse within weeks of stopping.
SafetyWell tolerated; transient bloating or flatulence in the first days is the main complaint. Avoid in severely immunocompromised patients, those with central venous catheters, short bowel syndrome, or critical illness, where rare probiotic bacteremia has been reported. Not a substitute for antidepressant or IBS treatment, and no drug interactions are established.
