Bacopa Monnieri

One of the few herbal nootropics with a replicated signal: about 12 weeks of standardized extract modestly speeds attention and improves delayed recall in healthy adults. The effects are small and slow to appear, and GI side effects are common.

What the science says

  • Memory (free recall) Moderate evidence

A systematic review of 6 RCTs, all 12 weeks long at 300-450 mg/day of extract, found Bacopa improved performance on 9 of 17 tests in the memory free-recall domain. Evidence for other cognitive domains was largely absent, partly because they were rarely measured.

  • Speed of attention and processing Moderate evidence

A meta-analysis of 9 RCTs (518 subjects; 437 in the pooled analyses) found shortened Trail-Making B performance (-17.9 ms, 95% CI -24.6 to -11.2) and reduced choice reaction time (about -10.6 ms, 95% CI -12.1 to -9.2), both p < 0.001. These are genuine but small effects, and the authors called for a head-to-head trial against an established agent.

  • Nothing happens acutely Limited evidence

Every positive trial in the meta-analytic literature dosed for at least 12 weeks; single doses have not produced meaningful cognitive benefits. If you take Bacopa for a week and feel nothing, that is the expected result, not a bad batch.

Dosage & safety

Studied dose300-450 mg/day of extract standardized to roughly 45-55% bacosides (equivalent to about 750-1500 mg of dried herb), taken with food, for a minimum of 12 weeks. Trials used CDRI 08, KeenMind and BacoMind preparations at these doses.
SafetyGastrointestinal side effects are common and dose-related: nausea, cramping, bloating, increased stool frequency and diarrhoea. Taking it with a meal substantially reduces this. Bacopa has cholinergic activity, so it may add to cholinesterase inhibitors and oppose anticholinergic drugs; sedation and additive effects with sedatives are reported. Animal data show increased thyroid T4, so monitor if you have thyroid disease. It also has calcium channel blocking activity in vitro and may slow heart rate. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding for lack of data.
