Aronia Berry
Chokeberry is one of the most anthocyanin-dense fruits known, but the most rigorous meta-analysis to date — 10 RCTs, 666 participants, with trial sequential analysis — found no significant effect on blood pressure, lipids, glucose or body weight, at very low certainty.
What the science says
- Lowers blood pressure Limited evidence
An earlier meta-analysis of controlled trials reported reductions in systolic and diastolic pressure, and this is the basis of most marketing. The 2025 critical meta-analysis found no significant pooled blood-pressure effect; only a subgroup using more than 50 mg/day of anthocyanins showed a systolic signal, and trial sequential analysis flagged the evidence as inconclusive rather than positive.
- Improves cholesterol Limited evidence
No significant pooled effect on total or LDL cholesterol. Reductions appeared only in a subgroup whose baseline total cholesterol was already below 200 mg/dL — the opposite of a clinically useful pattern, and a classic sign of subgroup noise rather than a real drug-like effect.
- Helps blood sugar and weight Limited evidence
Pooled fasting glucose was unchanged, and one subgroup analysis found fasting glucose actually higher in participants aged 50 or under. A separate 2026 meta-analysis focused on body weight and fasting blood sugar likewise found no meaningful benefit.
