What the science says
- The formulas as sold Limited evidence
No commercial mitochondrial support blend has been tested in a randomised controlled trial. Ingredient amounts are frequently well below those used in the single-nutrient studies cited on the label, particularly for CoQ10 and acetyl-L-carnitine.
- CoQ10 for fatigue Moderate evidence
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found CoQ10 supplementation reduced fatigue scores compared with placebo, with the effect strongest in clinical populations such as fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and statin users rather than in healthy people.
- PQQ for cognition and mitochondrial markers Limited evidence
A six-week randomised controlled trial of dihydrogen-PQQ in older adults with mild cognitive impairment measured mitochondrial biomarkers, brain metabolism and cognition. It is a single small study, and PQQ's human trial base overall consists of a handful of short studies with mixed outcomes.
