Magnolia Bark
Magnolia bark's active compounds honokiol and magnolol have genuinely interesting GABA-A activity in animals, but the human evidence is a couple of tiny industry-funded pilot studies on a Magnolia-Phellodendron blend. Marketing far outruns the data.
What the science says
- Lowers stress and cortisol Limited evidence
A pilot double-blind trial of a proprietary Magnolia officinalis plus Phellodendron amurense extract (750 mg/day for 6 weeks) in moderately stressed healthy women reported lower evening salivary cortisol and improvements on some mood subscales. The sample was small, several outcomes were null, and the study was funded by the ingredient manufacturer — this is hypothesis-generating, not confirmatory.
- Improves sleep Limited evidence
Honokiol and magnolol act as positive allosteric modulators at GABA-A receptors and shorten sleep latency in rodents, which is the entire mechanistic basis for magnolia sleep products. No adequately powered randomised trial has tested magnolia bark for insomnia in humans, with or without polysomnography.
- Aids weight management by reducing stress eating Limited evidence
A small pilot in overweight women reported that the same Magnolia-Phellodendron blend prevented weight gain relative to placebo over 6 weeks, but the primary weight outcomes were not significant. There is no meaningful evidence that magnolia bark causes fat loss.
