Magnesium Taurate
Marketed as the "heart" magnesium on the strength of a 1996 hypothesis paper, not trial data. Magnesium as a class lowers blood pressure by about 2 mmHg; there is no controlled human trial showing the taurate salt does anything the cheaper salts do not.
What the science says
- The cardiovascular rationale is a published hypothesis, not a finding Limited evidence
The entire premise traces to a 1996 Medical Hypotheses paper arguing that magnesium and taurine have complementary vascular-protective actions and should therefore be combined. That is a mechanistic argument written to prompt research, and the confirmatory human research was never done.
- Magnesium lowers blood pressure modestly — as any salt Moderate evidence
A meta-analysis of 34 randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trials (2,028 participants) found a median 368 mg/day for a median 3 months reduced systolic BP by 2.00 mmHg (95% CI 0.43-3.58) and diastolic by 1.78 mmHg (95% CI 0.73-2.82). That effect belongs to magnesium, not to taurate, and is small relative to any antihypertensive drug.
- Direct human data on the taurate salt are one uncontrolled study of a combination product Limited evidence
A 2026 single-arm observational study gave 121 low-risk adults with elevated BP a magnesium taurate-potassium citrate product (121 mg elemental magnesium, 180 mg potassium) plus lifestyle counselling for 3 months, reporting roughly -11/-8 mmHg. With no control group, added lifestyle advice and potassium in the same capsule, nothing can be attributed to taurate; the authors say so explicitly. Everything else is rodent work, such as a 2019 study in cadmium-hypertensive rats.
Dosage & safety
How to take it
Interactions
With medications
- tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics
magnesium chelates them and reduces absorption separate by at least 2 hours
- levothyroxine
reduced levothyroxine absorption separate by at least 4 hours
- bisphosphonates
blocked absorption separate by at least 2 hours
With other supplements
- separate taurine supplements
a 1,000 mg magnesium taurate dose already carries roughly 800 mg of taurine count it toward your taurine intake before adding more

Frequently asked questions
Is magnesium taurate good for the heart?
There is no controlled human trial showing magnesium taurate does anything for the heart that cheaper magnesium salts do not. The 'heart magnesium' idea comes from a 1996 hypothesis paper, and the confirming research was never done.
Does magnesium taurate lower blood pressure?
Magnesium in general lowers blood pressure modestly, by about 2 mmHg systolic in a meta-analysis of 34 trials. That effect belongs to magnesium, not to the taurate form, and it is small compared with any blood pressure drug.
How much elemental magnesium is in magnesium taurate?
Magnesium taurate is only about 9% elemental magnesium, so a 1,000 mg dose gives roughly 90 mg of magnesium plus around 800 mg of taurine. Check the elemental figure, because most products deliver less magnesium than the capsule size suggests.
