Liposomal Vitamin C

Some liposomal formulations do produce modestly higher plasma vitamin C than the same dose of plain ascorbic acid, but the trials are small, mostly industry-funded and inconsistent — and no study shows a clinical outcome that ordinary vitamin C cannot deliver.

What the science says

  • Produces higher plasma and cell vitamin C than plain ascorbic acid Limited evidence

    A double-blind randomised trial found liposomal delivery raised both plasma and leukocyte vitamin C above a non-liposomal control. An earlier crossover in 11 adults using 4 g single doses found oral liposomal vitamin C reached higher plasma concentrations than unencapsulated oral vitamin C. But a 2025 scoping review of the whole liposomal vitamin C literature concluded the evidence base is small and heterogeneous, with many studies failing to verify that the tested product was actually liposomal — a serious problem when 'liposomal' is an unregulated label term.

  • Achieves intravenous-level concentrations orally Limited evidence

    This is the central marketing claim and it is false. Even the best oral liposomal peaks land in the low hundreds of µmol/L; intravenous vitamin C infusions reach millimolar concentrations, roughly 20–50 times higher, which is the entire pharmacological point of the IV route. No oral formulation of any kind escapes intestinal transporter saturation to that degree.

  • Delivers better clinical results than regular vitamin C Limited evidence

    Untested. In the 4 g crossover study, the higher plasma levels from liposomal vitamin C did not translate into greater protection against ischemia-reperfusion injury. There are no randomised trials comparing liposomal against plain vitamin C on infection rates, immune endpoints, exercise recovery or any other outcome people buy it for.

  • Worth the price premium Limited evidence

    Liposomal products commonly cost 10–30x per gram of vitamin C versus plain ascorbic acid. Given that plain vitamin C is already 70–90% absorbed at doses up to 200 mg — which is enough to saturate plasma in most people — the extra delivery buys headroom that most users have no documented use for.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseProducts supply 500–1000 mg per serving. Published studies used single doses of about 1 g up to 4 g. For repletion and plasma saturation, 200–500 mg/day of any form is sufficient for most adults; the RDA is 75–90 mg/day. If you are taking liposomal vitamin C for general health rather than a specific high-dose protocol, you are paying for headroom you do not need.
SafetyGenerally safe. Formulation-specific issues: most use phosphatidylcholine from soy or sunflower lecithin (relevant with soy allergy), and several liquid formats contain ethanol as a solvent — check the label if that matters to you. Taste and GI upset are common complaints. All high-dose vitamin C cautions apply: above roughly 2 g/day, osmotic diarrhoea and cramping; increased urinary oxalate, which matters for calcium-oxalate stone formers and CKD; enhanced non-haem iron absorption, a concern in haemochromatosis and thalassaemia; and haemolysis reported with very high doses in G6PD deficiency. High-dose vitamin C also interferes with point-of-care glucose meters and faecal occult blood tests. Product identity is the practical safety issue — 'liposomal' is not a regulated claim and independent verification of encapsulation is rare.
