Mostly a branded ferric pyrophosphate wrapped in a phospholipid and sucrester matrix, sold at several times the price of ferrous sulfate. Tolerability looks genuinely better; the efficacy case leans heavily on reviews co-authored by the manufacturer, and independent appraisals call the comparative evidence insufficient.

The dominant product is ferric pyrophosphate carried in a phospholipid/sucrester matrix, absorbed partly as intact particles via enterocytes and M cells. The most-cited efficacy review concludes it is a valid first option for iron deficiency, especially in people intolerant of iron salts — but two of its authors are employees of the companies that make and market the ingredient, which is disclosed in the paper and should temper how the conclusion is read.

A 2024 review of oral iron formulations in Haematologica found that the newer formulations, liposomal iron included, are marketed on bioavailability and tolerability arguments that outrun the rigorous head-to-head trial data; superiority over conventional iron salts for correcting anaemia is not established. Most positive studies are small, open-label, or in narrow clinical populations such as CKD, IBD and post-bariatric patients.

Across trials the reproducible difference is fewer gastrointestinal complaints than ferrous sulfate, which matters because side effects, not pharmacology, are why most people abandon iron therapy. If you have failed iron salts on tolerability grounds, this is a defensible reason to try it; if you tolerate cheap iron fine, there is no demonstrated reason to switch.
