Colon Cleanse Formulas

A systematic review of colon cleansing for general health promotion found no credible evidence of benefit and a documented list of harms, from electrolyte disturbance and renal failure to bowel perforation and death. The "mucoid plaque" these kits claim to strip out has never been described at colonoscopy or autopsy.

What the science says

  • Colon cleansing improves general health or energy Limited evidence

The systematic review on this exact question concluded the evidence for benefit is essentially absent — no controlled trial demonstrates improved wellbeing, energy, immunity or disease risk from colon cleansing — while adverse event reports are plentiful, including cramping, vomiting, electrolyte abnormalities, renal failure, pancreatitis, air embolism, colonic perforation and deaths associated with colonic irrigation.

  • Removes accumulated toxins or "mucoid plaque" Limited evidence

Critical reviews of detox regimens find no clinical evidence that any commercial detox product enhances elimination of toxicants; the liver and kidneys do that work continuously. Mucoid plaque — the alleged rubbery layer of impacted waste lining the colon — has never been observed in the millions of colonoscopies and autopsies performed. The rubbery casts people photograph after a cleanse are consistent with the bentonite clay and psyllium in the product congealing in the gut.

  • Causes real weight loss Limited evidence

Weight dropped over a cleanse is stool water and gut contents, typically 0.5-2 kg, and it returns within a day or two of normal eating. No study shows loss of fat mass from a cleanse protocol, and the caloric restriction that usually accompanies these kits is doing whatever real work occurs.

  • Fiber-based components have genuine (unglamorous) value Moderate evidence

Psyllium, which appears in most kits, does have solid evidence for chronic constipation, stool consistency and modest LDL reduction at 7-10 g/day. That benefit is available from a $10 tub of plain psyllium taken daily — it does not require, and is undermined by, the stimulant laxatives and clays bundled around it.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseKits typically run 7-30 days, combining psyllium or flax 5-10 g/day, bentonite clay 1-3 g/day, magnesium oxide or citrate 400-1,500 mg, and a stimulant laxative such as senna or cascara delivering 15-30 mg hydroxyanthracenes at night, often with aloe latex. Nothing in this stack was dosed from efficacy data for "cleansing." Evidence-based alternatives with defined doses: psyllium 7-10 g/day, or PEG 3350 17 g/day for chronic constipation.
SafetyStimulant laxatives plus osmotic magnesium is a fast route to dehydration and hypokalemia, which is dangerous with digoxin, diuretics, or an eating disorder, and magnesium accumulates dangerously in renal impairment. Bentonite clay and psyllium adsorb and delay drugs — levothyroxine, oral contraceptives, lithium, antiepileptics and antibiotics must be separated by at least 2-4 hours, and some clay products have tested positive for lead. Contraindicated in bowel obstruction, diverticulitis flare, inflammatory bowel disease, recent GI surgery, pregnancy, and in children. Colonic hydrotherapy carries additional risk of perforation and infection from inadequately sterilized equipment. Persistent constipation or a change in bowel habit after age 45 warrants medical evaluation, not a cleanse.
