Acacia Fiber (Gum Arabic)

Acacia fiber is an unusually well-tolerated prebiotic — it ferments slowly and causes less gas than inulin — but the clinical evidence behind it is thin, consisting mostly of small single-centre trials, with the popular weight and cholesterol claims resting on one or two studies. Good tolerability, weak proof of benefit.

What the science says

  • Acts as a prebiotic and shifts gut bacteria Moderate evidence

    Acacia gum is fermented slowly in the distal colon and increases bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in human studies at 10-15 g/day, with less gas and bloating than equivalent doses of inulin or FOS. A 2024 randomized placebo-controlled trial of fibre supplementation in healthy adults documented microbiome shifts but limited effect on functional resilience measures. Microbiome change is not itself a clinical benefit.

  • Reduces body weight and body fat Limited evidence

    A single randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in healthy adult women found 30 g/day of gum arabic for 6 weeks reduced BMI by about 0.32 kg/m² and body fat percentage by around 2 percentage points versus placebo. The trial was small (about 120 randomized, 60 analysed), the dose is high enough to cause GI complaints, and no independent replication exists — a promising single result, not established fact.

  • Improves bowel regularity and stool consistency Limited evidence

    Acacia is only weakly viscous and, unlike psyllium, produces a modest bulking effect; small trials in constipation and IBS report improved stool form but are underpowered and rarely placebo-controlled. Clinicians often favour it during low-FODMAP diets because it is better tolerated, not because it works better.

  • Lowers cholesterol or improves kidney markers Limited evidence

    Studies in chronic kidney disease and sickle cell disease report reductions in inflammatory and metabolic markers, but they are small, often open-label and not independently replicated. A randomized trial of acacia gum for iron absorption found no benefit, in contrast to GOS and FOS.

Dosage & safety

Studied doseHuman trials used 10-30 g/day of gum arabic powder dissolved in water and usually split across the day; 10-15 g/day is the typical prebiotic dose and 30 g/day is what the body-composition trial used. Start at about 5 g/day and build up over 1-2 weeks. It dissolves clear and near-tasteless, its main practical advantage over psyllium.
SafetyAmong the best-tolerated fibres, but doses above 30 g/day commonly cause flatulence, bloating, loose stools and nausea. Rare occupational allergy to acacia dust is reported (printers' asthma); oral allergic reactions are very rare. As with any bulk fibre, take medications at least 1 hour before or 2-4 hours after, and use plenty of fluid; avoid in bowel obstruction or strictures. Gum arabic (E414) has GRAS status in the US and is an authorised EU food additive with no numerical acceptable daily intake specified. Safe in pregnancy at food-level intakes; supplement-level doses are untested.
